February 17, 2022 - Exodus 13-15

Happy are we when the Lord answers prayer and ends a long period of waiting. For instance, there is celebration when a soldier returns home after being deployed or a family member or friend recovers from an extended illness! For those who have fervently prayed, joy and happiness have replaced their fear and concern!

Israel marched out of Egypt as a group filled with joy and expectation. The event that they had prayed for and dreamed would take place was now becoming reality! Moses ordered the people to, "Remember this day in which you went out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage..." (Exodus 13:3) and to tell their children of God's greatness in the years to come.

The children of Israel had much to learn as the Lord directed them away from the land of the Philistines and toward the wilderness by the Red Sea. The excitement of the initial departure was soon replaced by the fear of following God by faith. The Israelites were directed to set up camp and suddenly the army of Egypt appeared in the distance. This created a terror that gripped the hearts of the recently freed slaves.

The miracles that had been done, the money they had received as they left Egypt, and the magnificent cloud leading them, lost their luster as the horrors of their past slavery crept into the hearts and minds of the Israelites. The strength of the Lord's power abruptly was doubted. In their fear all they could see was danger and impending death from the advancing army.

God had not begun this venture just to have in end in disaster! Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today" (Exodus 14:13). The people were allowed to see the overwhelming power of God displayed before their presence.

How many times does the past spring back into our lives and make us doubt or question God's power and abilities? It could be the abusive situation of childhood, a devastating divorce, the verbal barrage received from a manager or parent. Suddenly all the wonderful works of God are minimized, and fear stalks our hearts! Take courage and be reminded in times like this, God continues to show us His great power. Also, like Israel, give Him the praise when you see His great work accomplished in your life!
