November 2, 2021 - Romans 13:1-7

Today is an important day for Americans as they have the right to exercise their right to vote. This is a privilege that often is taken for granted and not used! There have been many opinions and statements spoken and written leading up to decisions that will be made on this date. All the rhetoric means little if the freedom to vote is not implemented on this day to determine direction for local, state and national issues.

Paul is speaking to a people that are accustomed to a different form of government and process of selection. Paul was raised with the attitude that God was in charge and throughout his religious life he had been taught that God was in control of all the world. This included those who were in governmental authority at that time. This brings us to the teaching that we are to submit to those whom God has placed in positions of authority. In fact, failure to do so will result in divine judgment as well as man's retribution (vv.2-3). Paul's message to the believers in Rome was that Caesar was appointed by God and a minister of God's plan and purposes. That indeed was a strange teaching when most Jews viewed Rome as an invader to be opposed.

The purpose for authorities were to provide certain benefits and protections that being separate and independent could not deliver. Believers did not cease to be a part of the community when they were converted, and Paul desired them to respond in a Christ honoring way. Therefore, individuals were to be subject, pay taxes, honor customs (laws), and love one another.

With so much political division and distrust today, Paul's words are appropriate to consider. We may not agree with every policy or lifestyle of our elected officials but that does not remove the mandate that Bible believers have been given to obey, pray and "do what is good" (v.3). I would urge you to go and cast your ballot today, engage in the rights we have as a citizen but also exercise your rights as a believer. Speak up cordially, pray fervently for those who currently have authority and be the example Christ desires His people to be in the marketplace of our culture.

With an Expectant Hope,

Pastor Miller
