November 3, 2021 - Romans 13:8-14

A good night’s rest is different for everyone. Some enjoy eight hours of uninterrupted sleep; others feel great with six hours and no phone calls! All would agree that rest is important, and we need it to be prepared for the day filled with activity and work.

Paul was aware of the difficulties surrounding the believers living in Rome. Even though he himself had not yet been there, he was familiar with the dangers and temptations that Rome presented to believers. His admonition to follow the commandments and to love their neighbors (vv. 8-10), bridges the previous discussion of government authority (vv. 1-7) to personal holiness (vv. 11-14).

Like New Orleans during Mardi Gras, Rome was filled with occasions to participate and experience many entertainment venues. The city had become known for its parties and excessive celebrations by government officials and the public in general. Between the acknowledged practices of pantheism and polytheism of the Roman culture, believers were continually challenged with maintaining their witness and faith. Paul exhorted the readers to awaken out of sleep and put on the armor of light.

Paul’s emphasis appears to be that of a soldier returning from leave and becoming prepared to assume his duties and military responsibilities. The believer is to cast off the works of darkness (v.12) and dress, walk and live as our commander Jesus Christ instructs. His exhortation is to fulfill verses 8-10 and not be like the rest of society and participate in the sinful acts listed in verse 13.

We are getting close to the holidays and the requests for revelry and celebrations will soon be upon us. Choices will be made as to which and how many parties to attend and all the temptations that surround such times. Now is the time to be alert and prepare! Discuss with your mate or family how much and with whom you will spend time with over the holidays. Temptations can be avoided with a little forethought and planning. Be alert, walk properly and avoid temptations.
