Berea Update for October 30, 2026

Happy Friday, Berea family! With Election Day coming up this Tuesday, it’s practically impossible to escape the political whirlwind. Our mailboxes are jammed, our screens are filled with commercials, and it feels like every conversation is charged with tension. In seasons like this, it’s easy for Christians to fall into one of two traps. The first is checking out completely—throwing our hands up in frustration and ignoring our civic responsibility. The second trap, however, is much subtler and far more dangerous: we turn politics into an idol.

I still remember a news broadcast from my teenage years that made a lasting impression on me. Back in November 2008, on the night Barack Obama was elected President, a reporter in Chicago's Grant Park interviewed a woman in the crowd. She had tears streaming down her face, overwhelmed with emotion, as she exclaimed with unbridled joy, "He’s the Savior! He’s the Savior!" When you hear a moment like that, it breaks your heart because it exposes a deep, aching human need. But let’s be honest with ourselves: political idolatry isn't unique to one party or candidate. We see political leaders across the entire spectrum making similar promise-filled speeches, using savior-like rhetoric, and offering ultimate rescue to a fearful public. And if we aren't careful, we fall right into the trap of believing them.

Idolatry sounds like an ancient word, but an idol is simply taking a good thing and making it an ultimate thing. It’s taking an earthly stewardship and putting it on the throne of our hearts. During election season, political idolatry usually sneaks in through three main doors:

Making Political Issues an Idol: We care deeply about righteousness, justice, and the good of our neighbors—as we should! But when a specific political issue or policy outcome becomes the sole lens through which we measure our joy, our peace, or our fellowship with other believers, we’ve crossed from biblical conviction into idolatry.

Making a Political Party an Idol: It is easy to slide from "I agree with this platform on key issues" to "This party represents the kingdom of God on earth." The moment we align our faith so tightly with an earthly political party that we can’t critique its flaws through Scripture, we’ve exchanged the Gospel for a party platform.

Making Our U.S. Citizenship an Idol: We can be genuinely thankful for the freedoms, blessings, and opportunities we enjoy in America. But when our national identity overshadows our identity in Christ—or when we worry more about the future of America than the advance of God's global Kingdom—we’re trusting in an earthly empire that will one day fade away.

So, how do we know if politics has quietly become an idol in our own hearts? Here is a quick, 5-question "Heart Check" to help us evaluate where we stand as we head into this weekend and to the ballot box on Tuesday:

The Joy Test: Does a negative political headline or bad poll number ruin your entire day, stealing your joy and peace?
The Fellowship Test: Do you find it hard to genuinely love, fellowship with, or view as a brother or sister in Christ someone in our church who votes differently than you on non-essential issues?
The Outrage Test: Do you spend more time consuming political news and getting angry online than you spend in prayer and reading God’s Word?
The Trust Test: Deep down, do you believe that the ultimate savior for our families, schools, and nation is a political candidate rather than King Jesus?
The Identity Test: If someone asked you to describe what matters most to you, would your political convictions pop up before your allegiance to the Gospel?

If you answered "yes" to a few of those, don't despair—you aren't alone! It just means it's time to take a deep breath, recalibrate, and put things back in their proper place.

Voting is a wonderful privilege and a meaningful stewardship. Go to the polls on Tuesday, vote with a biblically informed conviction, and care about your community. But when you step out of that voting booth, leave the ultimate burden in the hands of the true Savior—the King who never leaves His throne.

See you Sunday! Keep pressing on!

"The Berea Ironworks!" Begins Tomorrow Morning!

We are excited to announce the launch of The Berea Ironworks: The Noble Men Initiative at Berea Bible Church! Starting tomorrow, Saturday, October 31, 2026, all men and young men (youth group age and older) across our church family are invited to join us on the scheduled Saturday mornings from 8:00 AM – 9:30 AM as we dive into God's Word, pursue Christ-centered discipleship, and build strong fellowship together. The Berea Ironworks is designed as a multi-year initiative focused on systematic growth, character formation, and biblical leadership. This upcoming ministry year marks the beginning of our journey, featuring Phase 1 (Fall/Winter 2026) and Phase 2 (Winter/Spring 2027), with additional phases and deeper study to follow in future years. While the curriculum builds sequentially over the years, each meeting stands on its own as a valuable time of Bible study and fellowship. Men and young men are welcome to jump in at any time throughout the year.

The vision of The Berea Ironworks is rooted in two foundational Scripture passages:

Proverbs 27:17 (ESV): "Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another."
Acts 17:11 (ESV): "Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so."

The goal of this initiative is simple: to cultivate stronger men, foster healthier families, and make a greater Kingdom impact—passing down a legacy of godly character to the next generation. This initiative is open to all men of Berea Bible Church and even those in our local community who want to be mentored, grow in their faith, and stand alongside mature men of God. Whether you are a young man preparing for adulthood, a young father, or a seasoned saint, there is a place for you at the table.

Our first-year schedule is divided into two distinct phases:

Phase 1
Meeting 1 (Oct 31, 2026): Foundational Convictions
Meeting 2 (Nov 14, 2026): Discipleship
Meeting 3 (Nov 21, 2026): The Raw Materials

Meeting 6 (Jan 16, 2027): A Man Who Flees Temptation
Meeting 7 (Jan 23, 2027): A Man Who Fears the Lord

Phase 2

Meeting 16 (June 5, 2027): The Peril of Manufacturing Growth (Last meeting before summer break)

Each meeting starts promptly at 8:00 AM and concludes by 9:30 AM. You can look forward to:

Biblical Teaching: Grounding ourselves in sound doctrine and practical Christian living.
Sharpening Discussion: Honest, encouraging dialogue in small groups across generations.
Prayer & Brotherhood: Standing together in accountability and uplifting one another.

We recognize that showing up every scheduled Saturday morning is a real commitment of your time and energy. But now more than ever, men need each other, and the body of Christ needs men who are committed to standing together. We cannot afford to walk alone. To lead our families, serve our church, and impact our culture, we must unify, hold each other accountable, and lock arms in brotherhood. We need your presence, your voice, and your commitment. It is time for us to step up and become noble men of Christ-like character. Men, I really hope to see you in the morning!

Upcoming Events

1.  This Sunday, we will continue on in our series called: "Blueprint: God's Vision for the Church."  This week's message is called "Leadership in the Church: Part 1"  We'll be in a ton of different places in Scripture on Sunday morning.  We'll use 1 Timothy 3 as our anchor text.  Before we get specifically into the role and qualifications of elders and deacons, we'll be focusing in on the idea of authority this Sunday.  My prayer is that it sets a good foundation for all of us as we consider what it means to lead in the body of Christ.  Also, we'll be partaking of the Lord's Supper together as a part of the morning worship service!  PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO "FALL BACK" ON SATURDAY NIGHT by setting your clocks back an hour due to Daylight Savings Time.

2. Basketball continues at the church each Tuesday throughout the fall at 7:00 PM here at the church!  This is open to both men and women of all ages (kids invited too!).  Come for a time of fitness and fellowship together each Tuesday evening!

3. Berea Mom's Group (for moms of babies and toddlers) will be meeting on Thursday, November 5 from 10:00-1:00 here at the church.  Please contact Lauren Koranek with any questions!

4. Mark your calendars now for our next church family fun event!  We'll be hosting a Trivia Night on Saturday, November 14, beginning at 5:00 PM here at the church.  Come join us for a night of trivia, door prizes, food, fellowship, and more!  Dinner will be provided, but you are encouraged to bring a snack to share!  RSVP by email, or at the Welcome Center!

5. Truth is powerful—and it “launches” from Genesis 1–11, the foundational chapters of the foundational book of the Bible. Discover how to think more biblically and apply the timeless truths of Genesis to today’s cultural moment with teaching and encouragement from Answers in Genesis' Ken Ham and astronaut, Captain Barry Wilmore. This event, held at Cedarville University on Monday, November 9 at 6:00 PM, is free so plan to take the whole family! While the church is not making this an "official church event" you are encouraged to attend!  You can register here: Launching Truth Event at Cedarville University

6. We are praising the Lord for the Yutzy family as Isaac and MaryAisha are celebrating the arrival of baby Jude Matthew, who arrived Sunday, October 25! They are now home, and we want to encourage them through some meals over the next couple of weeks. To sign up, please visit this link: Meal Train for Yutzy Family
The family has requested a drop off time between 4:00-5:00 PM. Please text MaryAisha prior to heading their way on any day that you have signed up to provide a meal: (614)373-9235. Congratulations to Isaac and MaryAisha!

7. We have two volunteer needs for those of you who may be interested!  We'll be needing some folks to help set up chairs each week prior to Sunday morning.  This job can be done any time on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, and it helps if there's a team to do it together!  We already have some men who do it, but we'd like to expand our numbers to share the load, plus one of the men who regularly does it will be unavailable for several weeks!  Our second need is for Junior Church helpers!  If you are youth group age or older, and would like to help during the Junior Church portion of the morning worship service, please let us know in the office!  This role assists the teacher by being an extra set of hands!  As our Junior Church numbers have grown, we now have a greater need for more help!

Ways You Can Pray This Week
1. Pray for the lost this upcoming week!  There are so many who need Jesus!
2. Pray for our current elected officals, and those who are elected this week!  May they come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior, and make decisions based on the truth of His Word!

***Please know that there are many individuals who need prayer this week due to health concerns and other events going on in their lives.  Out of sensitivity to each individual's situation, these requests may not appear in this weekly blog.  We have a "Prayer Team" at the church who receives more detailed information, and commits to praying for individuals in our church family.

This Week's Devotions
Day 1: Guarding the Throne of Your Heart
1 John 5:21 (ESV): "Little children, keep yourselves from idols."
John closes his first letter with a direct, simple command: guard yourselves from idols. An idol isn't always a carved statue; it is anything that usurps the primary place of love, trust, and ultimate hope that belongs to God alone. When a political platform, candidate, or policy outcome becomes the thing that dictates our joy, peace, and security, it has quietly seated itself on the throne of our hearts. Recognizing how easily good, civic stewardships can turn into functional idols is the first step toward spiritual recalibration. Real freedom begins when we dethrone those earthly expectations and hand the crown back to Jesus.
Reflection Question: Is there an outcome in next week's election that you are holding onto so tightly that it threatens your trust in God?

Day 2: Our Ultimate Citizenship
Philippians 3:20–21 (ESV): "But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself."
While we carry earthly citizenship and the responsibility to care for our local community and nation, Paul issues a powerful reminder: our primary, unshakeable citizenship is in heaven. Earthly nations, empires, and political institutions rise and fall with the turning pages of history, but our ultimate home is secured by the Savior who reigns over all. When we get overly anxious or bitter about national politics, we are often treating our temporary residence as if it were our permanent inheritance. Keeping our heavenly citizenship front and center allows us to participate in civic life with wisdom and conviction while keeping our souls anchored in eternity.
Reflection Question: How does remembering that your true citizenship is in heaven change the way you view current political tensions?

Day 3: Not Trusting in Earthly Power
Psalm 20:7 (ESV): "Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God."
In ancient times, nations boasted in their military power—their heavy chariots and swift war horses. Today, people boast in political strategies, judicial courts, legislative majorities, and executive power. It is so easy to fall into the subtle trap of believing that true security comes from having the right political party in office. But the Psalmist redirects our gaze: the people of God find their unshakeable confidence not in human institutions or earthly power plays, but in the sovereign name of the Lord our God. Candidates will fail us and policies will shift, but God's kingdom remains steadfast forever.
Reflection Question: Where are you most tempted to place your trust—in political outcomes or in the power of Almighty God?

Day 4: Refusing to Conform to the Culture's Mindset
Romans 12:2 (ESV): "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."
The political machine operates on fear, outrage, polarization, and tribal loyalty to conform us to its way of thinking. It wants us angry, anxious, and glued to screen updates. But Scripture commands followers of Jesus to resist being squeezed into the mold of this world. Instead, we are called to be transformed by the renewal of our minds—allowing God's timeless Word, rather than media rhetoric or political panic, to shape our convictions, emotional reactions, and public voice. When God's truth fills our minds, the outrage machine loses its grip on our hearts.
Reflection Question: What source of media or news do you need to limit this week so your mind can be renewed by Scripture?

Day 5: Loving the Household of Faith First
Galatians 6:10 (ESV): "So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith."
Political seasons love to divide communities into hostile camps, tempting us to view anyone with a different perspective as an enemy. But Paul issues a clear directive to the church: do good to everyone, especially to those who belong to the household of faith. Our supernatural unity in Christ must always be stronger, deeper, and more visible than any earthly political disagreement. If political opinions cause us to harbour bitterness, slander, or coldness toward a brother or sister in Christ, we have allowed worldly politics to compromise our Christian witness. Love within the body of Christ must always triumph over ballot box differences.
Reflection Question: How can you actively show Christ-like love to a brother or sister in Christ who sees a political issue differently than you do?

Day 6: Seeking First the Eternal Kingdom
Matthew 6:33 (ESV): "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."
When we consume endless political news and obsess over cultural battles, anxiety and helplessness naturally flood our lives. Jesus offers us a divine reset button: stop chasing after the things the world agonizes over, and seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. When God's Kingdom, His gospel, and His righteousness become our highest priority, our daily perspective completely shifts. Earthly elections matter, but they are not the main event in redemptive history. When we seek His Kingdom first, He faithfully steadies our hearts and provides the peace we need to navigate uncertain times.
Reflection Question: What is one practical way you can seek God's Kingdom first in your conversations and schedule this weekend?

Day 7: The King Who Endures Forever
Psalm 146:3–5 (ESV): "Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish. Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God."
Scripture issues an explicit warning against a very human tendency: putting our trust in princes, politicians, or human leaders who cannot save us. Every earthly leader, no matter how gifted or well-intentioned, is mortal. They breathe their last, their terms end, and their earthly plans perish. But blessed is the person whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God forever! As we head into worship this Sunday, we can rejoice knowing that while human rulers come and go, King Jesus sits on an unshakeable throne that will never be overthrown or voted out.
Reflection Question: How does anchoring your hope in the eternal God bring peace to your heart as you face each day?

Kids (and Kids at Heart) Korner
Memory Verse
1 John 5:21 (ESV): "Little children, keep yourselves from idols."

Keeping God in First Place!
Imagine playing a game of tag, but instead of tagging each other, everyone is fighting over who gets to wear the golden winner's crown. If you care so much about winning that crown that you stop having fun and start yelling at your friends, the crown has become more important than the game! An idol is anything we put in first place instead of God:
Good Things vs. First Things: Caring about our country, voting, and wanting good leaders are good things! But if we worry about them more than we love Jesus, they become an idol.
Jesus Stays on Top: No matter who gets elected or who is leading in the world, Jesus is always King Number One, and He never loses His crown! When we keep Jesus in first place, we don't have to be scared or angry about what happens in the world!

Ask Your Family This Week: What is something good in life that can accidentally turn into an idol if we care about it too much? How does knowing Jesus is in charge help us stay calm and happy?

Fun Family Activity: The "First Place Trophy" Craft
Draw a big trophy on a piece of paper and write "JESUS IS KING" inside it. Let your kids color it in and tape it to the refrigerator. Talk about how earthly political leaders are like players on a team, but Jesus is the only One who gets the First Place trophy in our hearts!

Have a great weekend!  See you Sunday!
