Berea Update for October 16, 2026
If you’ve ever had a pipe start leaking under your sink on a Saturday afternoon or some other "home maintenance emergency," you know there’s a big difference between ordering a part online and driving down to a local hardware store. Sure, you can scroll through an app on your phone, read reviews, and order a replacement part. But when water is dripping onto your floor "right now," an app can't talk to you. It can't look at the weirdly shaped fitting you brought in, listen to what happened, or walk you down aisle four to hand you the exact wrench and seal you need to fix it. When you walk into a real, local store, you’re dealing with real people who know what they’re doing. You get actual help, real conversation, and the right tools to get the job done. Living our Christian faith is a lot like that, but we are living in a culture that is drowning in screen time.
I recently re-read a book called The Men We Need, and the author lays out six daily decisions that every one of us needs to make: "Forsake the fake, and relish the real!" That hits the nail right on the head, doesn't it? We live in a world that entices us to swap real life for a glowing rectangle in the palm of our hand. We scroll through tailored social media feeds, stream endless entertainment, text instead of talk, and convince ourselves that we’re "connected." But screen time gives us a cheap, synthetic substitute for actual life. It promises connection, but it leaves us feeling drained, distracted, and deeply isolated. You can have hundreds of online friends, but not a single person who knows the burden on your heart today.
The church is God’s divine antidote to our screen-obsessed culture. God built the local church to be a real, hands-on, face-to-face community. A screen can't give you a warm handshake when you're having a tough week. An algorithm can't sit across from you over a cup of coffee, pray with you in a crisis, or cheer you on as you grow in your faith. Digital pixels can never replace the blood-bought family of God gathering in the same room. When we choose to turn off the screens, get out of the house, and show up together at Berea on Sunday morning, we are making a bold, healthy choice. We are saying, "I’m choosing to forsake the fake, digital noise of this world, and I’m going to relish the real grace of God found in His gathered people." We aren't coming to watch a presentation or check off a religious box; we’re stepping into a room full of real people who are learning, growing, and walking through life together. It’s where we get equipped, encouraged, and reminded that we aren't facing life's leaks and plumbing problems on our own.
As we look ahead to Sunday morning, let’s put down the screens, get our hearts ready, and make it a priority to gather together in person. Come ready to catch up, encourage someone sitting near you, and relish the real work God is doing among us!
See you Sunday! Keep pressing on!
Introducing "The Berea Ironworks!"

We are excited to announce the launch of The Berea Ironworks: The Noble Men Initiative at Berea Bible Church! Starting Saturday, October 31, 2026, all men and young men (youth group age and older) across our church family are invited to join us on the scheduled Saturday mornings from 8:00 AM – 9:30 AM as we dive into God's Word, pursue Christ-centered discipleship, and build strong fellowship together. The Berea Ironworks is designed as a multi-year initiative focused on systematic growth, character formation, and biblical leadership. This upcoming ministry year marks the beginning of our journey, featuring Phase 1 (Fall/Winter 2026) and Phase 2 (Winter/Spring 2027), with additional phases and deeper study to follow in future years. While the curriculum builds sequentially over the years, each meeting stands on its own as a valuable time of Bible study and fellowship. Men and young men are welcome to jump in at any time throughout the year.
The vision of The Berea Ironworks is rooted in two foundational Scripture passages:
Proverbs 27:17 (ESV): "Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another."
Acts 17:11 (ESV): "Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so."
The goal of this initiative is simple: to cultivate stronger men, foster healthier families, and make a greater Kingdom impact—passing down a legacy of godly character to the next generation. This initiative is open to all men of Berea Bible Church and even those in our local community who want to be mentored, grow in their faith, and stand alongside mature men of God. Whether you are a young man preparing for adulthood, a young father, or a seasoned saint, there is a place for you at the table.
Our first-year schedule is divided into two distinct phases:
Phase 1

Phase 2

Meeting 16 (June 5, 2027): The Peril of Manufacturing Growth (Last meeting before summer break)
Each meeting starts promptly at 8:00 AM and concludes by 9:30 AM. You can look forward to:
Biblical Teaching: Grounding ourselves in sound doctrine and practical Christian living.
Sharpening Discussion: Honest, encouraging dialogue in small groups across generations.
Prayer & Brotherhood: Standing together in accountability and uplifting one another.
We recognize that showing up every scheduled Saturday morning is a real commitment of your time and energy. But now more than ever, men need each other, and the body of Christ needs men who are committed to standing together. We cannot afford to walk alone. To lead our families, serve our church, and impact our culture, we must unify, hold each other accountable, and lock arms in brotherhood. We need your presence, your voice, and your commitment. It is time for us to step up and become noble men of Christ-like character. Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 31, 2026 at 8:00 AM—we’ll see you there!

Ways You Can Pray This Week
1. Pray for all of our homebound individuals and those battling sickness or injury!
***Please know that there are many individuals who need prayer this week due to health concerns and other events going on in their lives. Out of sensitivity to each individual's situation, these requests may not appear in this weekly blog. We have a "Prayer Team" at the church who receives more detailed information, and commits to praying for individuals in our church family.
This Week's Devotions
Day 1: Anchored in Timeless Truth
Colossians 2:6–7 (ESV) — "Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving."
Digital trends and online opinions change every single hour, leaving our minds distracted and restless. But spiritual growth happens when we set aside the temporary digital noise and anchor our lives deeply in the unshakeable truth of Jesus Christ. Real faith grows when we stay rooted in God's Word and connected to His real-life church family.
Reflection Question: How much time do you spend scrolling through screens compared to resting in God's Word, and what small adjustment can you make today?
Day 2: Choosing Real Light over Artificial Glow
Ephesians 5:8–9 (ESV) — "...for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true)..."
Screens project a bright artificial light, but only Jesus gives our souls true, living light. When we gather with other believers face-to-face, we step out of the shadows of digital isolation and encourage one another to live out lives full of goodness, righteousness, and truth.
Reflection Question: How can your words and actions reflect Christ's real light to someone in your workplace, home, or neighborhood today?
Day 3: Taking Captive the Digital Distractions
2 Corinthians 10:5 (ESV) — "We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ..."
Our phones constantly feed us news, comparisons, and outrage that try to pull our focus away from the Lord. When we meet regularly with our church family, hearing God's Word preached helps us clear out the digital clutter, take wrong thoughts captive, and realign our minds with eternal truth.
Reflection Question: What is one negative or anxious thought fueled by media that you need to take captive and hand over to Jesus today?
Day 4: Real Love in Real Action
1 John 3:18 (ESV) — "Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth."
Real Christian love can't be expressed through a "like" button or an emoji; it is lived out in real, physical deeds. Being part of a local church family gives us constant, hands-on opportunities to put love into action—whether that means bringing someone a meal, offering a helping hand, or simply listening face-to-face.
Reflection Question: Who in your life or church family needs a practical, real-life act of kindness from you this week?
Day 5: Pursuing True Peace Face-to-Face
Romans 14:19 (ESV) — "So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding."
It’s easy for people to be rude, critical, or argumentative behind the anonymity of a computer screen. But in the body of Christ, God calls us to live differently—meeting face-to-face to build each other up, pursue peace, and extend genuine grace to one another.
Reflection Question: How can you choose to be a peacemaker in your real-life conversations and relationships this week?
Day 6: Serving Like Jesus
Mark 10:45 (ESV) — "For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
Jesus didn't observe the world from a distance; He stepped into our messy world to serve us in person. When we show up to church with a heart ready to serve others rather than just expecting to be entertained, we reflect the real, tangible heart of Jesus to everyone around us.
Reflection Question: What is one practical way you can serve someone in your family or church in person this weekend?
Day 7: Looking Forward to the Real Celebration
Titus 2:13 (ESV) — "...waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ..."
Every time we put away our devices and gather for real corporate worship, we get a small foretaste of the ultimate face-to-face celebration awaiting us when Jesus returns. Keeping our eyes fixed on our future hope gives us the strength to live faithfully in the present.
Reflection Question: How does knowing you will one day see Jesus face-to-face fill your heart with hope today?
Kids (and Kids at Heart) Korner
Memory Verse of the Week: Colossians 2:7 (ESV) — "...rooted and built up in him and established in the faith..."
Think about your favorite video game or TV show. It might be fun to watch, but can a video game give you a real hug when you're sad? Can a tablet play real catch with you in the backyard? No way! A screen is just pretend, but real life happens right in front of us! That’s why God made the church: screens can't replace real friends; watching church or playing on a screen by yourself can't give you real encouragement or real high-fives. God's family Is the REAL deal: When we come to church on Sunday, we put away our screens so we can sing together, learn from the Bible together, and help each other grow big and strong in Jesus. Let's make a choice this week to "Forsake the fake, and relish the real!"
Ask Your Family This Week: What is your favorite thing about putting away phones and doing something together as a real family? How does coming to church in person help us build real friendships?
Fun Family Activity: The "Screen-Free Family Night"
Put all phones, tablets, and TVs in another room or a basket for two whole hours! Make a meal together, play a board game, or go for a walk outside. Talk together as a family about how much better it feels to enjoy the real world and real people that God gave us!
Have a great weekend! See you Sunday!
